Reading is, without a doubt, one of the most important things your child will learn in First Grade. At the beginning and end of the school year, we give each child an individual reading assessment called the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment). This assessment tests reading fluency and accuracy, comprehension, decoding skills, and vocabulary knowledge. First Grade is a big year for reading and children show a lot of growth. One way to ensure growth is reading with your child every night. Not only will your child love the one-on-one time with you, but they will be learning something in the process!

First Grade Sight Words

In First Grade, learning to read is the foundation of everything else we will do and learn. It is important for your child to read as much as they can- practice makes perfect! While learning to read, your child will find that not all words follow the phonetic patterns they are being taught. These tricky words are called Sight Words. They will have these words in their Leadership Notebook, in a list format, broken down by quarter. The highlighted words are ones your child already knows- please go over the words not yet highlighted. I will be checking in periodically each quarter, with each student to see if they've mastered new words.

With these sight words, we set individual, classroom, and school-wide goals. One of our school-wide goals is to increase reading achievement- and one way to do that is to practice the quarterly sight words. We are tracking our goal on a bulletin board in the First Grade hallway. Listed below is the data from our grade level scoreboard. Help your child do their part in reaching our classroom and school goal, by practicing their sight words!

Handwriting

Penmanship is another important piece of First Grade. Students are learning to form letters correctly and write sentences- even paragraphs! Take a look at our handwriting expectations, if you're curious.
